01/24/2005 - Aloha!
Here is a photo of an old sugar mill. It has since been
abandoned, but was in use for many years prior to its neglect. Here is
some history of the sugar industry in Hawaii.
"In 1850, the Hawaiian legislature approved the hiring
of immigrant laborers from Japan, China, the Philippines and Portugal
to work in the booming sugar industry. The ethnic diversity of the
inhabitants of today's Hawaii reflects the diversity of these
immigrant laborers. Ultimately, the importation of workers and the
changes in land ownership laws took land away from many natives, land
which was instead bought up for sugar mills. The first sugar
plantation in Hawaii, the Koloa Plantation on Kauai, was founded in
1835, initiating an explosion in the sugar industry as mills began to
appear all over the islands." Enjoy! |
